Breach! An antonym for token is a group exhibition Breach! An antonym for token is a group exhibition that references the ways in which BIPOC bodies are used as reified raw objects for promotions to gain cultural capital. This creates an image of a performatively progressive institution under the guise of “inclusivity” and acts as automated absolution from taking necessary steps for systemic change. The work will manifest as satirical renditions of printed recruitment material, performance, and art objects from multiple mediums which will be displayed like retail storefronts. The exhibition is by six emerging artists of color: Morgan Mitchell, Kayza DeGraff-Ford, Wren Tian-Morris, Jean Serutoke, and Excel Garay. In Sarah Ahmed’s critically acclaimed book titled On Being Included, she asserts that the way institutions deal with “diversity and inclusive actions” reinforce as well as nurture the systemic default. That default being whiteness. It is not only the inclusions in a system that matters but the necessary interrogation of a system, its universalities as well as objectivities that was formed for the continued benefit of the defaulted few. The act of normalizing lip service progressiveness to a heightened state turns it into decorative background which reduces its critical edge. This is evident in NSCAD’s emails, social media, along with administrative claims during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, the rise of Indigenous Sovereignty, and the collectivisms of Settlers of Color. Ahmed expands, “The distribution of how diversity and equality work is also political since the burdening work usually falls on the shoulders of a racialized person. If such diversity work is less valued by organizations, then to become responsible for this type of work means to inhabit institutional spaces that are less valued.” #nscad #annaleonowens #breach #artstudent #token #contemporaryart
